* The Miss Black Tennessee Scholarship Organization is proud to present Ms. LaDonna Y. Boyd as Miss Black Tennessee USA 2010. This marks her first step into a journey that will take her across the state of Tennessee and beyond as she advances to the Miss Black USA national competition in 2010.
LaDonna is a native of Nashville, Tennessee, and the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. T. B. Boyd, III. A graduate of Spelman College with a degree in Economics and a minor in French, she is currently pursuing her Master of Business Administration Degree and has a true passion for traveling and meeting new people from around the world.
She has a special interest in minority owned businesses due to a family history in publishing and banking (R. H. Boyd Publishing Corporation and Citizen's Bank, both in Nashville). She is an active, life-long member of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Nashville, Tennessee, where she serves as the Youth Director, and she is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
As Miss Black Tennessee USA 2010, her platform for this year is H.E.A.R.T. & SOUL, and it embodies six key areas that strengthen and contribute to the enrichment of not only the lives of young African American women, but also all communities around the world.
The six areas are as follows:
H- Health and Wellness
E- Economic Empowerment
A- Artistic Expression
R- Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic
T- Travel and Explore Other Cultures
&
SOUL- Religious Expression and Gratitude Through Service
The purpose of this platform is to reach out to youth and young adults, and to demonstrate through action that there are other fascinating aspects of life other than what is displayed in negative images in the media and lyrics of popular songs. The scriptural reference for the platform is I Timothy 4:12, which says, “Do not let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.” Throughout the year, there will be numerous events that will exemplify at least one aspect of the platform.
She now shares the prestigious title with the first crowned Miss Black Tennessee, Oprah Winfrey, for which a special award was presented and accepted on her behalf by her father Vernon Winfrey and his wife Dr. Barbara Winfrey at this year's pageant at Hotel Preston.
Elaine Cato, board chair of the Miss Black Tennessee Scholarship Organization, believes that LaDonna will have much success with the organization behind her. "I'm very excited about the upcoming reign for our new queen. Our organization leads the pack as a supporting source of college funding by providing scholarships for African American women and offering an avenue for educational advancement and creative expression through community involvement. With our collaborative efforts we produce a wonderful pageant and offer a great experience for our contestants to reflect on for the rest of their lives," she said.
LaShan Matthews passed the crown to Boyd shortly after an emotional farewell performance as Miss Black Tennessee 2009. To request Miss Black Tennessee for speaking engagements and community appearances, contact Lynet Payne, Executive Director, at lpayne@missblacktennessee.com
The Miss Black Tennessee Scholarship Pageant is an auxiliary of The Miss Black USA Scholarship Pageant. Founded in 1984 to advance educational and professional opportunities for women of African- American descent, it is recognized as one of the premiere pageants of this nation.
The 2009 Miss Black TN Scholarship Pageant was hosted by international television personality Ms. April Woodard. “This was truly a competition of three dynamic ladies whom all possess beauty, talent, and brains,” Woodard said.
